Photography | History Of Photography
Have you ever questioned yourself where modern photography originated? While we are now into
the digital age
and away from film photography, the original photographic, lighting
and other techniques actually began in the 1820s. The first inventors of modern photography were Niepce and Daguerre. They used a special chemical component from chalk and
silver, and when exposed to light it darkens. This type of techniques used a glass negative to cement the
picture.
Manual Cameras
From the earlier cameras seen in western films, we have progressed on to manual
cameras with film. This negative or film captured the image on a roll which was then developed in a
dark room to prevent over exposure to light. The manual cameras used a technique or skill of setting up shots.
You had to comprehend shutter speed, aperture, metering and white balance to achieve the best picture possible.
This technique required you to spend much time setting up the shot and you had to be a good or professional
photographer to catch good photos in the natural surroundings.
Camera Aperture
Aperture is measured by the amount of light the lens will let in or
called F-stops. Manual focusing and depth of field are also important when setting the correct aperture for the
camera.
You need to know what numbers or settings will allow more or less light to enter the lens to avoid over or under
exposure and blurriness.
Camera Shuttle Speed
Shutter speed refers to the amount of time a lens remains open for the picture to be captured. You may have
known that in a room without much light and without using flash from your camera, it takes a while to capture the
picture on the film. The reason is because the light is dim and the shutter must correct for the lack of light. The
lack of light makes it necessary to expose the film longer to obtain the picture. Whereas if there is more light,
the shutter will move at a much faster speed.
Automatic Cameras

From the manual cameras we moved on and progressed into the automatic cameras. The cameras also became lighter
and smaller. The aperture and shutter speed was programmed into the camera by the various settings. ISO became
critical. ISO is the film speed. Instead of taking longer time to set up a shot, you just had to pick the correct
programmed setting and hold the button down to focus. Many cameras offered both automatic and manual override
options for those who still desired to treat photography as an artistic and specialized vocation.
Digital Cameras
Digital
cameras are the latest invention in photography. Now we are able to see the picture from the screen
behind the camera before and after we take the picture without the use of film and negatives. We can then email the
pictures to all of our friends using the Internet or use our home printers to create colourful prints. Photography
has progressed from the focus of taking the perfect shot with a skill born to a few elite photographers to everyone
taking pictures. This does not mean that quality photography and skilled photographers will not remain. There is
still the need for quality in taking professional grade photographs. Light sensitivity, aperture and shuttle speed
settings, is still important when handling a digital camera and unless you invest in good or higher range of
digital cameras, you will find good quality photographs still missing. Good photography is still dependent on the
expertise and techniques in setting the correct lighting, whether natural or
artificial for the subject.
You might want to know how to create or take good photographs in dim surroundings like a museum to share with
your friends and family. Knowing and acquiring the past photography techniques will assist you in attaining that
perfect photograph with your new digital camera. Photography originated from a few people, but we can now see the
advancements their inventions have led us to this present moment.
