Games | Understanding Online Gaming For Mum and Dad

Have you ever wondered what your child was rambling on or talking about at the dinner table when he or she started saying things like 'VR' or 'RPG'? If so, you are not alone. 'VR' and 'RPG' are not new text or short messaging acronyms. They are acronyms for gaming.

What is 'VR' and 'RPG' In Online Gaming?

If you at least thought that it is related to Internet when you heard 'VR' or 'RPG', then you are on the right track. Exclusive to the online environment, 'VR' or 'RPG', which consequently stands for 'Virtual Reality' gaming and 'Role Playing Games', are just two aspects of a gaming world gone wild. The days of playing scrabble or monopoly are over in today's generation, but we do not believe you will hear too many people complaining or lamenting about it.

Online Gaming

Today's generation is fascinated with online gaming. It presents an opportunity to play games over the Internet with hundreds of people anywhere at a time. Online gaming is available to anyone with a computer and a fast broadband or cable Internet connection. There are thousands of online games available in the Internet to play by anyone, sometimes free and sometimes for a fee, one-time or subscription based. The types of games can range from the familiar family board games to more complicated games, which require a hundred page manuals to understand. One thing that they all have in common, however, is that they are fun and very challenging to play.

Kids Game

The most common type of online game you will probably come across is the Flash game. They are usually located on some educational sites or Yahoo! for Kids for example. These games may be single or multiple players but they are always full of colours and they are fun to play. Since they run inside the web browser, no special equipment or accessories are required. These are the fairly simple games, more intriguing than checkers, but no more difficult to play than chess.

'Shoot-Them-Up' Online Game

Another type of online gaming is more violent than the ones we described above and it is similar to the 'shoot-them-up' type games first found on the Nintendo and Playstation systems. Designed from the Player's point of view, the player normally manoeuvres around the screen with a weapon-clad hand, frequently changing weapons or accessories as the game's scenario permits. The violence in these games may vary from mild to offensive, and as a parent, you are cautioned to monitor your children's access to them, especially since these games can be played online with other people.

'VR' and 'RPG' Online Games

Next comes the Virtual Reality gaming and Role Playing Games. These types of games normally require the players to spend an extensive amount of time online since they assume the role of a game character in play. Players work hard to build up and accumulate an inventory of weapons or skills, none of which can be easily accomplished in a period of 30 minutes or less. They will then go on to interact with other characters who may agree to extend game time even longer.

Both Virtual Reality gaming and Role Playing Games require and encourage strategic thinking, good coordination and fast response. However, as parents, you may not be comfortable with the violence that is rampant in some of these games. Nor may you be comfortable with the amount of time your children spend playing these kinds of games. Depending on the complexity and levels of the game, any one person could spend at least six months at a single game and having access to thousands of other players worldwide simultaneously. It does not exactly make them easy to walk away from. It is always advisable to learn about these games right along with your child and make the decision to play them, or not play them.

NOTE: Please remember to follow the guidelines set by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) when buying games for children less than the age of 18.
