Games | Games Obsession
Parents of teenagers may sometimes find their children too obsess with computer or video games. Some teens
may tend to shun away from other interests in life in favour for video gaming activities to the point where they
may even withdraw from society. This kind of behaviour should never be encouraged. Below describes some of the
signs of games obsession and some advice on how to recognize and deal with it.
Recognizing Your Child Games Obsession
To actually recognize the signs of a teen obsession with computer or video games isn't as easy
as one thinks. Gaming always starts off as an interest and then it starts to grow and become an addiction. When
we question their motivations for repetitive long hours of game play, they may rebut our concerns with reasons
and logic and sometimes may even make it a point to question our own flaws or shortcomings as parents. Since no
parent or adult ever really wants to admit their flaws, we may sometimes give in and convince ourselves that
probably spending 4 hours in front of video or computer games isn't that bad. After all, we,
ourselves, may even spend that much time on the phone, at the computer or transmitting data back and forth
with our cell phones. Be very careful not to fall prey to the logical and convincing teens.
Playing computer or video computer games can become addictive and if the time spent playing them is
not carefully and closely monitored, they will consume everything that a teen may care about. The moment you notice
and discover that your teen's grades are falling, homework not done completely or social life and activities
starting to drop off, you must nip that video computer game time in the bud. If you wait too long and too late to
restrict video game time, you may even experience pre-adult temper tantrums from your children that you are not
prepared to handle correctly.
At this point, the child has become obsessed and will do anything to get his or her hands on the video game
controller. Another sign of obsession with video computer games is behavioural change. A child who is obsessed with
gaming will tend to lose patience with things and with others. He or she will be quick to anger and react to
situations without completely thinking of the consequences. If you have paid some attention to
playing computer or video games, you will notice that some gamers require such kind of behaviour to win
or to advance to a higher level.
Replace Video Computer Games With Other Activities

It is really unfortunate, but a teen who is obsessed with this kind of violent quick-action video computer
gaming is literally being trained to react in the manner described above. That is why, it is pertinent and
necessary that as a parent or an adult, you need to consider and restrict your kids from gaining too much access to
this kind of entertainment. Instead, you should replace it with activities that calm them such as art, music,
theatre, etc. You should also expose your child to other non-violent pleasures like swimming, dancing, skating,
etc.
There are a lot of discussions and debates circulating around about the impact and influence that video computer
games have on today's youth and some of it might warrant paying closer attention to. As a parent, you will do well
with your child's desire to play computer or video games by keeping a very close eye on them and look out for any
undesirable changes.
NOTE: Please remember to follow the guidelines set by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) when buying games for
children less than the age of 18.
