Astrology
The history of astrology is actually quite
entertaining and interesting.
Astrology has played quite a significant part of
many cultures going back to pre-historic times. Some of the
history of
astrology is veiled in controversy and mystery. This
is because astrology was used prior to tools were invented to
see planets that cannot be seen with just the naked eyes.
Astrology In Pre-Historic Times
Astrology made its first representation in pre-historic
times. Maps of the heavens were discovered on
cave walls, much similar as other cave drawings. These are the
most contentious and mysterious of all evidences of the history
of astrology. It was impossible for these cave dwellers to
possess the appropriate tools necessary to see the planets. How
did they know where the
planets and
stars were?
The next appearance of astrology was in ancient Mesopotamia
civilization, an ancient region in West Asia between Tigris and
Euphrates rivers, which is now part of Iraq, and other ancient
cultures. These cultures also had comprehensive astrological
charts that cannot be explained. However, the study and
information of astrology was likely to have passed to
Greece through trade with these ancient civilizations.
Greek And Roman Astrology
From Greece, astrology spread out and became the form that
we recognize in the western world today. Astrology was a daily
part of life in Greece, followed by the Roman Empire. The names
of the sun,
moon, planets and the
constellations signs are all named after some Roman
deities and others.
Greek and Roman scholars were often given secured positions
in the court of the current King or Emperor. Their knowledge of
the stars was considered as an essential part of royal
decisions, battle planning, and other aspects of the royal
life. However, astrology experts of these times often found
their lives ending unexpectedly when the current government did
not like what they had to say or predicted.
Astrology Re-Appeared In Western
Europe
For these and other reasons, the art of astrology was slowly
disappearing. However, it made a wonderful come back in the
Western Europe during the time of the
Renaissance. Astrology became once more an art form to be
regarded with great respect. Those who studied and knew
astrology were thought to be some of the greatest minds of that
period.
However, when the age of enlightenment ended, astrology
again became a less prominent and little discussed topic.
In the late nineteenth century, astrology came to light again.
A few astrology  scholars formed a foundation for the study of
astrology. The interest in the study of astrology soon
became wide spread throughout Western Europe, and
then spread to America in the early twentieth
century.
Astrology Became Popular In America
In the 1930's, the art of astrology became very popular. In
the middle of that decade, Gerald Gardner formed the religion
now known as Gardnerian Wicca. Wicca, like Pagan religions
before it, focused on astrology for the use of divination and
prophecy. Astrology was also brought to popularity in
America through the publication
of American Astrology magazine. It was a magazine credited for
the first horoscopes.
Astrology became a form of entertainment information for
many in America as horoscopes became commonly found in major
newspapers and other popular print media. However, astrology as
an art has once again begun to disappear in the Western world.
Christian groups still rile against the study of astrology.
Some people refuse to see any truth in the astrological
predictions. However, astrology still remains a popular study
in
many cultures today.
